Tanya Stephens est né en1973 à St-Mary, Jamaïque. De son vrai nom Vivienne Stephenson, Tanya Stephens fut influencée par Smokey Robinson, les stars du R'n B Us, mais également les classiques du reggae tel Bob Marley...

elle fait ses débuts dans divers sound-systems et sort son premier single en 1993 « Is this for Real », sur le Far East riddim. 

Le succès est au rendez-vous.

Elle part ensuite en Suède où elle enregistre un album de reprise sur lequel elle aura des problèmes relationnels avec la Warner.
